To Win

To win a round, three of your pieces must form an uninterrupted line - down, across, or diagonally. The first player to win 5 rounds wins the game.

The Board

a 4x4 grid

Unlike a traditional 3x3 tic tac toe board, Click Tac Toe is played on a 4x4 grid. However please note that you only need 3 (not 4) in a line to win.

The Pieces

Each player has 6 pieces which can be placed on the board.
A player has either or at the start of the game.

General Play

Play is controlled by a black square which cycles around the board moving from the top left square, proceeding left to right through each row.

The Active Square movement

This black square shows where one of your pieces will be placed if you press the fire button.

When you place a piece it is initially shown as a question mark.

This placement is private to you. You never see the private placements of your opponent and they never see yours.

The question mark will turn into the shape of your piece when the active black square returns to the same place on the board on the next scan. It then becomes visible to both players.

If both players have played a piece on the same square the question mark will turn onto the shape below and that square will not count towards the three piece line of either player.

a blocked square

As the active square continues to cycle around the board you can place your remaining pieces as the results of earlier scans of the board are revealed. You place your pieces in order to complete a line of three, or to block your opponent from forming their own line of three. You also have the option of removing any piece that you placed previously.

The player with the earliest instance of an uninterrupted three piece line will the round.

Yellow will win because the top right square will be revealed before blue’s pieces on the second and third rows are revealed.

During the first (or subsequent) passes, either player may choose not to place all of their pieces. Thus, you may finish any pass with pieces in reserve. You can also remove previously placed pieces to replenish your stock of available pieces. (However you should be careful not to remove a piece that will give your opponent a win.)

removing this will give blue a win
